Artist Statement
“Art-making is one of life’s greatest adventures. Exploration begins without too much planning—just a playful spirit and a beginner’s mindset. My decisions on what marks, colors, shapes and textures to add or subtract are intuitive. It’s a process of reflection and self-discovery. Each finished painting is an artifact of my personal journey. And I hope parts of my story resonate with you.”

About Susan Angeles
Born in the Philippines, Susan Angeles moved to New York in 1981. She began painting at an early age, and later took private art lessons with renowned Filipino artist Sofronio Y. Mendoza (SYM). Yet it was not until 2020, after retiring from a career in marketing and real estate, that Susan became a full-time artist. She studied at the Art Students League of New York, completed Art2Life’s Creative Visionary Program, and has shown her work throughout the Hudson Valley and New York City.

The constant evolution of Susan’s art is very much a reflection of her multi-faceted life as a Filipino-
American immigrant. Her fascination with texture and the therapeutic effects of “sensory play” in art-
making is strongly influenced by her experiences in raising a child with autism. Her collages integrate
paper or fabric into her paintings. She has also used a variety of materials such as crushed minerals and
found objects as textural elements.

In her latest abstract landscapes, Susan explores and pushes the versatile qualities of acrylic paint to
create both transparent and opaque layers and visual textures.

Susan’s creations often combine smooth and rough textures, organic and geometric shapes, as well as
figurative and abstract compositions—a process informed by her life experience navigating diverse
cultures.
