About Kate Kester
Kate Kester is a painter, based in Rhinecliff, NY. She works in watercolor and acrylic, combining techniques such as wet-on-wet, pouring, spraying, and masking with painterly brushstroke. Kate graduated in 2017 from Bard College, in Annandale-on-Hudson NY, where she studied Fine Art and Art History. She has been inspired by the odd, surreal, and bodily works of Hannah Wilke, Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Henri Mattise, and the Byzantine art period.
“I paint a lot of plants. I used to paint bodies, but my plants are sort of a stand-in for them now. Plants don’t have faces to tell you what emotion they are feeling. You can see it as a pretty plant picture, or you can read into it what you will.”
Kate manages the Betsy Jacaruso Studio & Gallery and often shows her work there. She is a freelance graphic designer and works with artists and local businesses to promote their online presence.
